What do you think will happen when an artist ends up being burned-out? Yes you’re right; she will turn it into an artwork! That’s the short version of story behind ‘Burn-out Dagboek’, the diary that illustrator Maaike Hartjes created during (the recovery of) her burn-out.

Both a beautiful piece of art and a very useful tool, Burn-out Dagboek can help people understand what it must be like to recover from a burn-out or something alike. My friend Suzanne (have a look at the business cards I did design for her here) joined one of Maaike’s workshops and bought this beautiful book. She lend me her special signed copy of the book, so I could enjoy Maaike inspiring story too.

Mark Manson writes in ‘The subtle art of not giving a f*ck’ (of which a review will be online soon) that we actually don’t know what experiences turn out to be positive or negative for us. Some of the most difficult and stressful moments in our lives also end up being the most formative and motivating. I guess that’s also the case for Maaike Hartjes’ burn-out. At the end of the book Maaike lets the readers know that her burn-out brought her many good things and that she wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. What a beautiful conclusion to such a difficult experience!
