Miniseries : Chernobyl
a series by HBO and Sky Television, about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986
launched in 2019, 5 episodes of app. 45 minutes
Everybody knows what happened in Chernobyl back in 1986. I was still a baby so of course I can’t remember it from back then. But at least I know the outcome of a series of unfortunate decisions: a failed test that led to the biggest nucleair disaster this world has suffered, ever…
HBO and SKY Television released a 5-part miniseries based on the true story of the Chernobyl disaster. ‘Chernobyl’ by far is the most intense series I’ve ever watched and I honestly wanted to quit watching it several times because the story and the images really do get under your skin. At the same time exactly that makes it impossible not to see the whole series and of course I watched it until the very end. I can only recommend that you’ll see this miniseries too!

With an outcome like that, this story can only be heartbreaking. But what was even more shocking to me was to see what really happened that day at the power plant. How power, egos and a totalitarian regime can make people decide to take such incredible risks that will kill and impact so many innocent lives for decades to come, I actually cannot imagine…
What even disgusted me most was that both the chief of the power plant and government responded the same way to what had happened; they simply refused to accept the severity of the situation, not taking responsibility and denying that there even was an explosion. Of course those actions, or non-actions, only resulted in impacting, threatening and ending more innocent lives.
But it happened and the truth should be told and more importantly we should learn from it to make sure this will never happen again. That’s why this series is so incredibly important and I think everybody should watch it. It shows the human face behind this disaster, both the beautiful and also the very ugliest parts.
